The professor gives a lecture in the “monkey barn.” The cantor in the synagogue forgets the melody of “Adon Olam.” A Hegel specialist learns to dig a trench. Late for a sermon about the Good Samaritan, a seminary student steps over a fallen passerby... The heroes of this book are scientists and ordinary people, political prisoners and investigators, students and soldiers, inhabitants of the center of Moscow and the outskirts of Bat Yam. Victor Vakhshtein mixes adventure tale, university novel, diary notes and autobiography to tell a story about friendship, everyday life and watching the world fall apart.

Victor Vakhshtain (born 1981) is a sociologist, specialist in the field of social theory and studies of everyday life. He was a professor and dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the Russian-British University in Moscow (Shaninka).
